The VOC’s historical archives have been the subject of extensive digitization efforts. The Huygens Institute announced that five million scanned documents from the VOC archives are now digitally searchable. This initiative, part of the GLOBALISE project, aims to provide easier access to information on topics such as enslavement and colonial violence, offering new perspectives on the colonial past.
Additionally, in May 2021, the Huygens Institute received €3.8 million from the Dutch Research Council to further digitize the VOC archives. This funding supports the development of a digital infrastructure to facilitate advanced research on the company’s operations and its impact on global history.
