Why a resilient future is regenerative

This year at Davos, one theme stood out: the gap between global challenges and local realities.

As Carlos Alvarez Pereira (Club of Rome) put it, “𝘗𝘳𝘰𝘣𝘭𝘦𝘮𝘴 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘥𝘦𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘥 𝘨𝘭𝘰𝘣𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺, 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘭𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘥 𝘭𝘰𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺. 𝘞𝘦 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘳𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘬 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘷𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘨𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥 𝘶𝘱.”

Here are the insights that stuck with me—and why they matter for business, investment, and leadership:

🔹 1. Water: The 4% Paradox
Only 4% of freshwater is consumed, yet seasonal storage and contamination remain critical. The solution? Filtering and aquifer innovation: The challenge isn’t scarcity, it’s stewardship.

🔹 2. Tech Transfer: Speed & Collaboration
Eva McLellan (Roche) highlighted that scientists thrive on unsolvable problems, but universities and industry must collaborate faster. Purpose + necessity = breakthroughs.

🔹 3. Rule of Law as a Foundation
Luc Vandenbulcke formula for investor stability: Physical safety, enforceable contracts, financing, and arbitration. Rule of law enables progress.

🔹4. Deal Flow & Senior Guidance
No new framework for impact: quality, sizable volume deal flow needs to meer senior mentorship. Not to waste a crisis, you need to seek the opportunity.

🔹5. Nature: From Constraint to Opportunity
André Hoffmann and Johan Rockström made it clear: nature isn’t a limit, it’s the raw material for resilience. Businesses must shift from extractive to regenerative models.

🔹6. The 1.5°C Reality Check
Rockström’s warning: 𝘞𝘦’𝘭𝘭 𝘣𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘩 1.5°𝘊 𝘪𝘯 3–5 𝘺𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘴. Business as usual is a 1% risk we can’t afford. (Gilles Andrier, Givaudan).

🔹7. Leadership Gap
Paul Polman’s (ex Unilver) challenge: 70% are aware of nature’s value, but only 5% discuss it at board level. We have the science, data, and solutions: what’s missing is courageous leadership.

🔹8. Cities Leading the Way
Over 40 European cities adopting recycled materials show local action outpaces federal / national policy. Partnership is the new leadership (Miljan Gutovic, Holcim).

🔹9. Regenerative Economics
Kirsten Schuijt (WWF) framed it: “Protect nature *with* people, not *from* them.” Incentives must align with conservation as a holistic value.

🏃‍♀️The Call to Action
– Scope down: Localize global goals (Rockström).
– Measure what matters: Biodiversity metrics belong on balance sheets (Andrier).
– Collaborate: Cross-pollinate ideas across sectors.

As Johan Rockström said, “The green valley is beyond the summit.” The question is: Who’s ready to climb? The strong do what they can, and the weak suffer what they must.
